How our Witham cosmetic dentists can improve the whiteness of your smile.

If you are young and are happy that your teeth are white and attractive, you might wonder what the fuss is about them becoming stained and discoloured? Provided that you avoid the well-known staining products such as red wine and you donโ€™t smoke, you might be tempted to think that your teeth will remain that colour throughout your life.

Unfortunately, life is not that simple and, even with the best care and will in the world, your teeth will eventually lose their youthful sparkle and you may find that you also join the list of those seeking to have their teeth whitened by a dentist.

It is true that you can help your teeth by avoiding red wine, not smoking and avoiding any other staining food and drinks. This is a good start but there are many non obvious staining food and drinks as well. For example, any fizzy soft drink is likely to be acidic making the enamel surface rougher than normal and helping any staining foods you do eat to attach more easily. There is also a non-food factor which means that if we live long enough, our teeth will start to discolour anyway.

Darkening of the dentin

One thing we canโ€™t stop as we grow older are some of the signs of ageing. From a dental perspective, one of the most visible of these is that the dentin layer of the tooth which lies behind the enamel, starts to darken in colour. Although this is not a surface material, it does show through the translucent enamel on the outside. This gives it a duller, sometimes yellowing, appearance, that no amount of brushing will correct. So what can we do to help those who have teeth that are stained and/or discoloured at Blake Dental?

Dental hygienist

Especially for younger people, having their teeth scaled and polished by the hygienist at our Witham practice, is not only very beneficial for their gum health but also for removing some of the otherwise difficult to remove staining from the enamel surface of the tooth. Even though this will not affect any darkened dentin material, it is a great start for everyone and is excellent at helping you to avoid gum disease. So, stained teeth or not, everyone should see their dental hygienist twice a year.

Enlighten teeth whitening

We are pleased to tell you that we have been accredited as the Enlighten Regional Centre of Excellence in this area recently. This is great news and we are excited to be able to offer this excellent teeth whitening treatment which we believe to be one of the very best available.

The treatment comes in the form of trays that are produced from impressions that we take of your own teeth for a safe and comfortable fit. The Enlighten gel is then placed into these trays by yourself at home and worn for a short period of time each day – our dentists will advise you how to do this. The treatment can take two to three weeks to see the full result and we are sure that you will be delighted with the outcome.

There is some excellent information about this treatment on our website for those who would like more detail. We are also, of course, available to answer any questions that you may have about teeth whitening or any other treatment that we provide.

Porcelain veneers

For anyone whose teeth are badly stained or have suffered from minor damage such as chips or cracks in the surface, dental veneers may offer a more effective solution than the above.ย Although this does often require an invasive procedure, it does also provide a solution that can last for around ten years if you follow our dentistโ€™s care advice. The porcelain used is a non porous material that should resist most staining, though we strongly recommend that you maintain a diligent cleaning routine.

While a teeth whitening procedure enables you to whiten your teeth by several shades, having veneers fitted means that you can have a smile as white as you like. While most people opt for a natural looking whiteness, you could go for the whitest white possible if you wish. Please discuss this with our dentist during your initial consultation.

Having your teeth whitened can greatly improve your smile and probably make yourself feel more confident when you do. If you would like to see how we can help you, why not arrange to see one of our cosmetic dentists for a consultation? To book your appointment, please call Blake Dental today on 01376 501688. We look forward to helping you!
