Snoring is a common problem, and one that even those who claim that they do not snore probably do so from time to time. It becomes a potentially more serious issue though when the snoring is persistent. Naturally, the direct effects of the sound caused by snoring are mostly noticed by anyone that shares a bed or room with us. Even though we may not notice that we snore ourselves, it can still lead to other health issues and so is best addressed with the aim of stopping it altogether.
Let us take a look then at issues associated with snoring and how we can help you to control the problem with the snoring devices that we have available at Blake Dental.
Snoring is caused by the air that flows through our throat when it is partially blocked. This causes vibrations and the snoring sound that most of us are familiar with. This becomes more serious when the airways are blocked altogether for a short period of time, widely known as ‘sleep apnoea’. This has been associated with health issues such as diabetes and heart disease, but the first thing that most people notice is that they are constantly tired and irritable during the day due to their poor quality sleep. Over time, this can make us feel as though we are barely functioning; not the ideal way to feel throughout your working day.
If sleep apnoea is the main reason for your disturbed sleep, even getting an early night is not likely to make you feel refreshed upon waking. If you feel tired or ‘sluggish’on a regular basis, we advise that you discuss this with one of our dentists who may suggest a snoring device to help.
SleepWell is a ‘mandibular advancement splint’, also often shortened to a ‘MAS’. It works by helping to position the lower jaw in a forward position, thereby allowing the airways to stay open and avoid the vibration which leads to the sound that all too many people know as snoring. One of the most effective and comfortable ways of treating snoring problems is to have a MAS provided by a dentist.
The SleepWell snoring device allows you to close your lips around it which is not always the case with all makes of this type of device. This is important as it allows your mouth to remain moist and helps to prevent problems associated with a dry mouth, such as gum disease.
They are also designed to feel as comfortable as possible in the mouth and also to allow a range of movements to make it more comfortable and natural. There is also some evidence that this snoring device may also help in the prevention of Bruxism, a difficult to control problem as it usually occurs while we are asleep. Naturally, these devices are only worn at night, or whenever we plan to have our main sleep if we work on shifts.
The SleepWell device has a good record for resolving the issue of snoring and sleep apnoea and we feel that we can help you to get a better quality of sleep, enabling you to wake up ready for the day rather than feeling tired as you may have been doing for some time. Your sleep partner will also almost certainly be grateful too after getting a good (and peaceful) night sleep.
If you suffer from a problem with snoring or suspect that you may have sleep apnoea, or if your bed partner tells you that you do, it doesn’t now have to be this way. In order to take the first steps to reduce or stop your snoring, we recommend that you contact us for an appointment with our MAS dentist who will be able to discuss your issue and determine if this would be an effective way of treating your problem.
The SleepWell snoring device is both effective and cost effective and could just prove to be the one simple thing that you do that makes a real difference to your quality of life,
