Patients of Blake Dental can now take advantage of the latest facial aesthetics treatments at our Witham dental practice

Dental practices are mostly known for treatments designed to keep our teeth and gums strong and healthy. Increasingly, they are also becoming well known for cosmetic dental procedures, such as teeth whitening, that are designed to provide you with a more attractive smile. These treatments have been enhanced over the years and are now widely available.

Perhaps less well known is that many dentists, including our own, also offer facial aesthetic treatments that allow you to ‘iron out’ those wrinkles and lines that make us look older and generally less youthful.

The number of dentists offering these treatments has increased, at least partially due to legislation that was passed a few years ago, which regulates the use of these treatments. Unfortunately, too many places ‘popped up’ on the high streets offering facial treatments with little or no training or safety procedures in place. This created a number of problems, both in treatments that resulted in facial issues and in a few cases, proved to be potentially dangerous too.

Safe facial procedures

By bringing these treatments within a dental environment, the risk of any problems has been largely eliminated. All of the facial clinicians at Blake Dental are fully trained and undergo regular ongoing training to ensure that our patients have a safe and successful treatment, with the results that they are aiming for.

So how do we do this?

The first step

Before any treatment goes ahead, it is important for us to understand what your hopes and aims are. For this to happen, an initial consultation needs to be made. Here we will listen to what you hope to achieve and discuss whether this is feasible and to offer our professional advice as to the best way to proceed.

Naturally, there are some limitations. For example, it is very unlikely that a ninety year old would be able to have the skin of an eighteen year old. That doesn’t mean that we can’t improve things though and we will discuss this with you honestly and not make any promises that we can’t achieve.

Similarly, we have all come across excessive results from these treatments, sometimes due to untrained application of the treatment and sometimes from people wanting extreme results. On the safety side, you can rest assured that we carry out your treatment safely and with experienced practitioners. For those seeking more extreme facial modifications, please understand that we reserve the right to refuse any treatment that we consider to be dangerous or ill advised.

The treatment options

There are two main types of facial aesthetic treatments. These are ones that help to smooth face wrinkles effectively and the other which replaces lost collagen to help ‘plump’ up certain features which we will discuss shortly.

Smoother skin

This treatment involves the injection of an anti-wrinkle serum just underneath the surface of the skin. This shouldn’t hurt and you might feel just a little prick as the needle enters the skin. The serum works by causing the muscles in that area to relax and reduce the wrinkles that would otherwise have been caused. This greatly reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles and will help you to have younger and smoother looking skin.

We are aware that some patients might be concerned about this treatment producing a ‘frozen smile’. This is very unlikely to happen and our experience and advances in this treatment mean that this shouldn’t be a problem at all, with most cases of this probably due to untrained clinicians providing this before regulation was brought in.

Dermal fillers

Another consequence of becoming older is that we start to produce less collagen and this gradually leads to problems such as thinning lips and the areas around the cheekbones. This can make us look older and our face less fresh looking than it used to be.

By injecting dermal fillers into these areas to restore the fullness, we can help to restore your appearance and fill out those thinning lips and other areas.

Once again, some of you will be familiar with the infamous ‘trout pout’ and other similar issues. Again, this will not happen at our practice and we are more than happy to address any concerns that you might have about these treatments.

Side effects and restrictions

While most people can have these treatments, there are a few restrictions. You must be at least eighteen years old to have this done and also, pregnant women are strongly advised not to undergo these procedures or when breastfeeding.  There are also certain medical conditions which restrict this treatment which is why we discuss any health issues you might have during your initial consultation with us.

It is also worth mentioning that while these are safe procedures, the injections may cause a little bruising around the area for a few days afterwards. For this reason, we generally advise patients to have these treatments away from any social occasions etc to avoid the bruises from being visible. This is a personal choice of course, but one to be aware of.

If you are no longer happy with the way that your skin looks and would like to talk to us to see how we can help, why not book your initial consultation? You can do this by calling Blake Dental on 01376 501688. We look forward to helping you on the very short journey to a more youthful appearance!
